Activities:
Book 1:
- discuss your favorite summer time activity
- discuss: how would you have reacted to Emma making noises and pointing?
- Would you have shared your tube?
- Act out the story as a play
- Draw a picture of yourself playing your favorite game in the pool with Harper and Emma
- Write a letter to the author: you can discuss why you like the book, anything you would change and how you feel about Emma having autism
- Pretend you are the author of the book: write an alternative ending
Book 2:
- Discuss: what is your favorite animal Emma and Harper saw in the book and why?
- Discuss: What animal do you wish they had gone to see and why?
- Discuss: How would you have reacted to the group of children making fun of Emma
- Discuss: Do you have a friend that is different like Emma?
- Would you want a friend that is different like Emma?
- Act out the story as a play
- Draw your favorite animal standing next to your favorite character from the book
- Discuss: Where do you think Harper and Emma should visit next?
- Draw a most wanted picture of the bully in the book
- Pretend you are the author of the book: write an alternative ending
- Write a letter to the author: you can discuss why you like the book, anything you would change and how you feel about Emma having autism
